Non-invasive and Continuous Monitoring of a Pilot-scale Trickling Filter: Weight, Off- Gas and Hydraulic Characterization
نویسندگان
چکیده
A pilot-scale trickling filter has been constructed in order to collect experimental data on a fully characterized biofilm system for the selection, development, calibration and corroboration of mathematical models which describe such a system’s dynamic behavior. The design of the unit was made such that it allows a full characterization of the relevant model parameters, and an easy monitoring of the system’s performance only using measurements of inflow and outflow. By means of an electronic balance, the weight of the filter unit is continuously monitored. It is shown that information about the filter’s weight can be used to accurately determine biofilm and hydraulic characteristics. Also the off-gas is continuously monitored for CO2 and O2. These measurements allow to establish closed carbon and oxygen mass balances. Several short term experiments are conducted to reveal the possibilities of off-gas analysis to monitor, model and control the filter’s performance. Two tracer tests were conducted on the filter without and with biofilm. NaCl and Thioflavine-S were used as a tracer. The hydraulic behavior of the filter without biofilm could be described using an advection-dispersion model. If a biofilm was present however, a CSBR (continuously stirred biofilm reactor) approach was found to yield an optimal description of the hydraulics.

Monitoring and modelling a pilot-scale trickling filter using on-line off-gas analysis
The process characteristics of a pilot-scale trickling filter system were quantified by means of a measurement campaign with the use of off-gas analysis. A load shift experiment was conducted in which the influent load to the trickling filter system was suddenly decreased. To model the biodegradation in the filters, the model developed by Rauch et al. (1999) was used. This model was extended wi...
متن کاملTreatment of Dairy Wastewater Using Pilot Scale Tricking Filter
A pilot scale trickling filter and secondary sedimentation are used to evaluate the feasibility of this process for the treatment of raw dairy waste. The BOD in the raw waste of 252 to 1200 mg/l is reduced 50-73% by a single stage and a further 17-55% by sedimentation tank. Treatment efficiencies are determined at various waste strengths and influent flow rates. With a loading rate of 5-12 kg B...

Introduction:Among the pollutants in waste gases, volatile organic carbons (VOCs) are very harmful for human, animals and plants. Formaldehyde is a member of VOCs family and is very toxic, mutagen and carcinogen. For removing formaldehyde, Some biological methods for treating waste gases such as bio-trickling filter reactor (BTFR) have been developed by scientists. The aim of this study was to ...
متن کاملInduction of denitrification in a pilot-scale trickling filter by adding nitrate at high loading rate.
Oxygen transferred from the liquid phase into a biofilm can be used for aerobic degradation of organic matter and for nitrification. A second possible pathway for the removal of organic matter is denitrification in anoxic zones deeper in the biofilm. At high organic loading rates with insufficient oxygen supply to the biofilm, denitrification could be induced by providing the biofilm with exter...
